Go See the Michael Jackson Biopic — And Leave Your Serious Hat at Home

A/N: Before anyone comes into my comments screaming allegations, I encourage you to thoroughly read through them, and no, I don’t mean soundbites off influencers, but actually read the court cases. You’ll also come to some rather uncomfortable conclusions about what happened and the people MJ trusted.

Let me paint you a picture.

It’s a Friday night. The kids are handled. You’ve got your best girlfriend (or five) beside you, a bucket of popcorn the size of a small child, and two hours where nobody needs anything from you.

Now add Michael Jackson.

That’s Michael, the new biopic that hit theaters on April 24th — and if you haven’t gone yet, put your shoes on, because this one is absolutely worth seeing on the big screen while you still can.

This Is Not a History Class. It’s a Party.

Go in ready to have fun, and you will have the time of your life.

Michael tells the story of the King of Pop from his early days as the lead of the Jackson 5 all the way through the peak of his solo career in the late 80s. It’s big, it’s glossy, it’s a full-on event of a movie — and it knows exactly what it is. This is a celebration of one of the greatest entertainers who ever lived, and it delivers on that promise from start to finish.

Don’t walk in looking for a documentary. Walk in the way you’d show up to a concert: ready to feel something, ready to sing, and ready to have a good time.

Five Reasons to Get Your Tickets Today

1. Jaafar Jackson will make your jaw drop.

Michael’s real-life nephew plays him in the film, and this kid is something else. The movement, the stage presence, the way he makes you forget you’re watching a performance — it’s one of the most impressive debut performances I’ve seen in years. Your whole theater will be buzzing. I promise.

2. The music will hit different on a big screen.

Thirteen songs. Surround sound. Giant screen. “Thriller.”

I’m telling you — you will get chills you forgot you were capable of getting. Hearing these songs in a theater, performed, is a completely different experience than whatever playlist you’ve got going in the car. It’s the closest thing to actually being at a Michael Jackson concert that most of us are ever going to get.

3. Colman Domingo is everything.

He plays Joe Jackson, and he brings so much to the role that you almost forget you’re watching a supporting character. Every scene he’s in crackles. Nia Long as Katherine Jackson is warm and grounding in all the right ways too. The whole cast shows up.

4. The production is stunning.

The costumes, the sets, the concert sequences — this movie was made for the big screen. It’s the kind of film that loses something if you wait to watch it on your laptop at 11pm while folding laundry. (We’ve all been there. This one deserves better.)

5. You will leave happy.

And isn’t that the whole point sometimes? Not every movie has to be a heavy, prestige, think-about-it-for-a-week experience. Sometimes you just want to walk out of a theater with your girls feeling good, humming “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” and already planning where you’re going for dinner.

Michael is that movie.

Make It a Full Night

This is a prime girls’ night situation. Dress up a little, go somewhere fun for dinner first, get the good seats, and just enjoy yourself. You’ve earned it.

The movie is rated PG-13 and clocks in at just over two hours — which is the perfect length. Long enough to feel like an experience, short enough that you’re not dragging by the end.

It’s already one of the biggest movies of the year for a reason. Go see what the fuss is about.

Seen it yet? Tell me everything in the comments — I need someone to debrief with!
